Barbara Chesire-Chabbaga

Barbara has 12 years insurance experience, 9 of which have been in microinsurance and inclusive insurance. An actuarial scientist by training, Barbara is passionate to see insurance play a role in the reduction of poverty in her country, Kenya and across the continent. She co-founded AB Consultants in 2014 with a goal to make insurance accessible to those who need it most. At AB Consultants she has led microinsurance projects in market research, strategy development, product design, pricing and actuarial consulting across different countries in Africa including Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Tanzania and Zambia.

Barbara has volunteered on the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) microinsurance working party that brings together actuaries from all over the globe looking at giving more information to actuaries about microinsurance. Barbara has extensive corporate governance training and serves on the board of Britam General Insurance company - Kenya.

She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Actuarial Science from the University of Calgary in Canada minoring in Statistics and Economics. She has a Diploma in Actuarial Techniques and actuarial training from Swedish insurer, Folksam. She has attended various leadership courses including Women in Leadership at Strathmore Business School, Kenya and recently completed the Women Directors Leadership Summit, a program offered by Strathmore Business School, Kenya in conjunction with The Cranfield School of Management, UK. Barbara is a member of various professional bodies including The Microinsurance Network, Women Corporate Directors (WCD), The Actuarial Society of Kenya (TASK) and Women on Board Network.

With her work experience, expertise and both local and international networks, Barbara is passionate to see more people benefit from insurance to mitigate risks and alleviate poverty.
